Devi

29th June -26th July, 2025

Exhibited Artists

Devis, Dakinis, Khandroma, Khecara, Goddess, Yakshini, Apsara, Gandharva, and Demoness— the embodiment of the elements or enlightened energy—she’s everywhere. She appears familiar, iconic, or mundane depending on your perception. She is fierce, playful, or loving depending on your karmic wind. She can be beautiful or terrifying, volatile and unpredictable. She is a protector, a teacher, a guru, a destroyer of the ego—depending on your stage of realization. The forms of Devis are countless, and they can merge.

Emily and Tara met circumambulating the Boudhanath Stupa in 1997. As nomadic artists, their paths have continually crossed places holy and unholy ever since. They have long wanted to collaborate on a show, and when it finally came time, the theme arose in both their minds almost immediately. This particular body of work is both an exploration and an offering. For both of them, painting the various forms of Devi is an act of devotion—a gesture of love and reverence toward the ineffable. Though it is uncapturable, the attempt itself becomes an offering, made in the hope that it may benefit and inspire.

Tvayaitad dhāryate viśvaṁ, tvayaitat sṛjyate jagat
Tvayaitat pālyate Devi, tvam atsy ante ca sarvadā
1.75 By You is this universe supported, of You is this world born, by You is it protected, O Devī,
nd You always consume it at the end.’
