Takpa Gallery is proud to present its first show ‘Personal Realities’ with artists Urgen Dorje and Tsherin Sherpa. The show explores their parallel practices as they take buddhist philosophy and iconography and then mold it to reflect their personal worldviews and aesthetics. Urgen Dorje’s art practice derives from decades of training in traditional thangka art. He seeks to reiterate a classical narrative style of thangka painting through careful use of symbols, motifs and colors. By preserving this unique cultural heritage, he brings to life the distinct himalayan perspective on life and art. On the other hand, Tsherin Sherpa approaches these ancient ideas from a more contemporary lens. His works juxtapose tradition with modernity to reflect his own experience living between the east and the west. Through this, he seeks to reevaluate the place of ancient cultures in contemporary popular culture.
Thus, ‘Personal Realities’ traces common threads that run underneath the distinct visual styles of the two artists. More importantly, it celebrates them as distinct contemporary voices within the global artistic stage.
